- Tintwistle was a township in Mottram-in-Longdendale Parish, Macclesfield Hundred (SK 0297), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- In 1894 the village of Micklehurst was added to Mossley civil parish [Lancashire].
- Since 1974 Tintwistle has been part of the county of Derbyshire.
- Including the hamlets of Arnfield and Woodhead.
- The population was 1021 in 1801, 3027 in 1851, 1622 in 1901, and 1364 in 1951.

- Woodhead, St. James (C of E). A chapel to Mottram founded in 1724, becoming a parish church in 1856. Registers of Baptisms 1780–1981, Marriages 1856–1960 and Burials 1782–1992 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office
- Tintwistle, Christ Church (C of E). Founded 1836 as the parish church for Hollingworth and Tintwistle. Registers of Baptisms 1837–1882, Marriages 1839–1949 and Burials 1837–1893 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office
- Micklehurst, All Saints (C of E). Church Lane, Mossley. Founded 1895 as a chapel to Millbrook, becoming a parish church in 1962. Registers of Marriages 1900–1939 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office. Registers of Baptisms from 1895 are held at the church (no burials).
- Tintwistle, Ebenezer Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan), Old Road. Built in 1830. Registers of baptisms 1839–1956 are at Manchester Central Library.
