- Northwich was a township in Witton chapelry of Great Budworth Parish, Northwich Hundred (SJ 6573), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- In 1894 it was extended to include the whole of Castle Northwich and Witton cum Twambrooks, and parts in Northwich Urban District of Hartford, Leftwich, Winnington.
- In 1936 parts of Lostock Gralam and Winnington were added to Northwich.
- In 1955 Northwich was further extended to include parts of Davenham, Hartford and Rudheath civil parishes.
- The population was 1338 in 1801, 1377 in 1851, 17611 in 1901, and 17489 in 1951.

- Witton, St. Helen (C of E). An ancient chapelry in Great Budworth parish
- Dane Bridge, St. Paul (C of E), The parish church for part of Northwich township from 1846.
- Northwich, Holy Trinity (C of E). A chapel to Witton, founded in 1842.
- Northwich, St. Luke (C of E). Founded 1884 as a chapel to Witton.
- Northwich, St. Wilfrid (Roman Catholic). Founded 1840 in York Buildings, from 1852 leased former independent chapel in Cross Street. The present church in Witton Street was built in 1866. Registers of baptisms 1857–1945, marriages 1856–1947 and burials 1862–1937 are at the Cheshire Record Office.
- Northwich, Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan), London Road. Founded 1777, rebuilt in 1889, closed in 1964. Registers 1811–1969 are at the Cheshire Record Office.
- Northwich, Central Methodist Chapel (Free), Witton Street. Founded 1835, Built in 1854, closed in 1954. Registers 1837–1953 are at the Cheshire Record Office.
- Northwich, Bourne Methodist Chapel (Primitive), Witton Street. Founded 1848, Built in 1877, rebuilt in 1973 and 1988.
- Northwich, Methodist Chapel (Primitive), Zion Street. Built in 1864, closed in 1968.
