• Birkenhead was a township and chapelry in Bidston Parish, Wirral Hundred (SJ 3289), which became a civil parish in 1866.
• In 1898 Birkenhead was extended to include Claughton cum Grange, Oxton, Rock Ferry and Tranmere.
• In 1928 part of Bidston cum Ford was added to Birkenhead.
• In 1933 Birkenhead was further extended to include Landican, Noctorum, Prenton, Thingwall and Woodchurch, and parts of Arrowe, Bidston cum Ford and Upton by Birkenhead civil parishes.
• Since 1974 Birkenhead has been part of the county of Merseyside.
• Including the hamlets of Egerton Park, Grange and Woodside.
• The population was 110 in 1801, 24285 in 1851, 110912 in 1901, and 142501 in 1951.

• Birkenhead, St. Mary (C of E), Church Street. An ancient chapel to Bidston, originally serving the whole of the township of Birkenhead; closed in 1974. Registers of Baptisms 1721–1968, Marriages 1721–1974 and Burials 1719–1957 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office.
• Birkenhead, Holy Trinity (C of E), Price Street. Founded 1840 as the parish church for part of Birkenhead; closed in 1974. Registers of Baptisms 1840–1974 and Marriages 1842–1974 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office No burials took place here.
• Birkenhead, St. Anne (C of E), Beckwith Street. Built in 1847 as a chapel to Holy Trinity, becominga separate parish in; closed in 1987. Registers of Baptisms 1850–1987, and Marriages 1862–1987 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office. No burials took place here.
• Birkenhead, St. James (C of E), Laird Street/Hoylake Road. Built in 1858 as a chapel to St Mary, becoming a separate parish in 1876. Registers of Baptisms 1865–1967 and Marriages 1869–1972 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office (no burials here).

• Birkenhead, St. Matthew (C of E), Park Road East. Built in 1882 in Claughton Road as a chapel to Holy Trinity; rebuilt in 1889 on Park Road East, becoming a separate parish in 1914; closed in 1970. • Birkenhead, St. Bede (C of E), Built in 1888 in Park Road West as a chapel to Claughton, Christ Church, becoming a chapel to All Saints in 1911. Closed in 1941 after air-raid damage, and replaced by a new building in Upton Road in 1960 which has been attached to St James since the closure of All Saints in 1971.
